Coach Profile: Prairie View's Doug Whitcraft 2/24
By Dion Clisso PrepsKC Managing Editor
Even though Doug Whitcraft has been the head coach for only two years at Prairie View High School in La Cygne, Kan., for two seasons he is a veteran coach in the school district.
Whitcraft has been a part of the Prairie View program for 21 years of his 28 years of teaching and coaching. It seems that Prairie View is the right fit for Whitcraft who came from a similar size school district when he was in high school. Whitcraft went to Cass-Midway High School in Cleveland, Mo., before attending Evangel University in Springfield.
The coaching bug bit Whitcraft in high school and it was something he wanted to do from that point on.
“My Sophomore year of high school I knew I wanted to be a coach,” Whitcraft said. “I thought a lot of my High school coach.”
At Prairie View he doesn’t just coach football. Whitcraft is also the eighth-grade boys and girls basketball coach and he also coaches track.
For the last two years he has been the head coach for the Buffaloes and in that time they have gone 5-4 in 2010 and 4-5 in 2011. Both years they have finished at 3-2 in the very competitive Pioneer League ending in third place both years. This past season the Buffalos got off to a 4-1 start before falling on hard times.
Even though the team didn’t reach the playoffs there are a lot of positives going on with the Prairie View program. On the field the Buffalos will return a big freshman class to go with a good size group of juniors and sophomores. In the classroom the Prairie View players saw a lot of success and that is something Whitcraft and his staff is very proud of.
“My coaching staff is here to develop the toughest most respectful young men in the state of Kansas,” “ Our motto is Trust Loyalty and Excellence and we push them to be the best they can be at everything they do. Because of this we ended up with a team GPA of 3.18.”
