Olathe West was looking to get back in the win column, as Olathe East wanted to push their 2-game win streak to three. In the end the Hawks extended their winning streak with a 42-14 win. East now stands at 4-2 while West falls to 1-6.

Both teams had a rough go to start the game with much of the first quarter consisting of stalled drives followed by punts. Olathe East Senior RB Jalen Proctor would get the Hawks on the board with 57 seconds remaining in the quarter when he broke free on a 25-yard touchdown run.

Some tough Defense by both sides again forced three and outs. Olathe East would put a drive together and find the endzone with an 11-yard run from Daylan Mburu, the extra point was good, Hawks would lead 14-0.

Olathe West looked to be gaining momentum as they put together a drive down the field. A costly turnover by the Owls would give Olathe East time to score before half. The Hawks made big play after big play before junior quarterback Jack Cornell found senior RB Ray Smith III for a 7-yard Touchdown grab, giving the Hawks a 21-0 lead with just 14 seconds until halftime.

After the kickoff Olathe West would come out in gun formation, to the surprise of Olathe East Head Coach Courtney Porter who said after the game.

“We thought they would come out and take a knee, so we had to call a timeout and get ready.” Senior Defensive Back Jalen Grace would come up with an interception and return it to the 26-yard line with 4 seconds left on the clock. As the halftime horn went off Senior WR Gerard Reed III hauled in a Touchdown pass from Cornell, making the score 28-0 at the break.

The Hawks started the 3rd quarter right where they left off, they would put together another drive of big plays, and cap it off with a 38-yard Touchdown pass from Cornell to Reed III, extending their lead 35-0.

Olathe East put pressure on the Owls all night, a fumble recovery by Junior Defensive Lineman Josiah Young put the Hawks in great field position. It didn’t take long for Cornell to find Reed III open for a 36-yard touchdown, their 3rd connection of the night, with 6:30 left in the 3rd the lead was 42-0.

A rare mistake from Cornell on the night, as he was intercepted by Senior Defensive Back Camden Eckstein. A big run by Sophomore Josh Foland would put the Owls on the 1-yard line, and he would punch it in on the next play, with 2:53 left in the 3rd quarter the Hawks would lead 42-7.

Finishing off the scoring on the night, Olathe West Senior Elijah Hakim would find the endzone on a 10-yard run, the final score 42-14 Olathe East.

Olathe East will take its 3-game win streak to Gardner-Edgerton next Friday and try to hand the Trailblazers their first loss on the season.

Olathe West looks to get back on track against Shawnee Mission North.
