Making positive strides

The first two weeks of the 2023 season have come and gone without a win for Southeast, now in its first year in a co-opt with Central. Its opponent in Week 3's DiPasquale Moore/Preps KC Metro Game of the week, Truman, hasn't won either.

On Friday, both teams will take the turf at Interscholastic League Stadium looking for win No. 1. A victory won't be easy for either team. And points have been hard to come by. Each has struggled to sustain much offense out the gate.

Through two games, opponents have outscored Southeast 117-26. University Academy put up 62 points on the Knights in Week 1 and Cameron scored 55 in a Week 2 matchup.

Southeast is led by first-year head coach William Williams. This year, the Knights increased their roster and talent under a co-opt with Central. It's a rebuild, but players from both schools have made the transition and enjoy playing with each other, Williams has said.

Truman may be winless, but the Patriots have been more competitive, losing by scores of 28-19 and 20-14 to Raytown South and crosstown rival William Chrisman.

Truman's futility over the last few seasons is difficult to ignore. The program's last winning season was in 2015. Since 2016, the Patriots have won just 7 games and are 2-49 over the last six seasons.

Their play so far this year could be a positive sign for Truman and second-year coach Robert Stough.
