A chance to break through

Sumner Academy, 6-2, will host 1-7 Topeka West in the first round of the Kansas 5A East playoffs. The game is the DiPasquale Moore PrepsKC Metro Matchup. But don’t let the Chargers’ one-win record fool you, Sabres head coach Andrew Wright said.

“Their record doesn't tell the whole story,” Wright said. “They have some outstanding football players.

Topeka West’s skill players and defensive line could present a challenge, Wright said.

“We have our work cut out this week as we prepare for them,” he said. “They do a lot offensively, and their defense is excellent.”

Coach speak aside, Sumner has a really good opportunity to notch its first postseason win since 2010.

“Our goal all year was to play meaningful football in November,” Wright said. “Our guys understand the significance of this moment, but we want to treat this game just like any other game. Our preparation hasn't changed. We still focus on one day at a time and trust our processes as we prepare for Topeka West.”

Offensively, the Sabres are led by a stout offensive line: Nicholas Flores, Nathan Rios, Alec Tyler, Raul Flores, Josue Copto, and Kyran Washington. The group paves the way for running back Antonio Harrison, who’s rushed for 1,275 yards on 144 attempts (8.7 yds/carry) and leads our team with 14 TDs.

Harrison is “a good kid who enjoys playing football,” Wright said.

Sabres quarterback Camron Johnson has thrown for 818 yards with 11 TDs and just two picks.

“He takes care of the ball and gets our guys lined up correctly,” Wright said.

Johnson isn’t throwing to himself. Wideouts Howard Peoples and Jayden Gordon are standouts.

Peoples and Gordon both have team-leading four touchdown receptions this year.

Defensively, senior linebacker Javeare Akande has tallied 61 total tackles (31 solo and 30 assisted) with 3 TFLs. Defensive line also has been a plus, Wright said. Nathan Rios has added 24 tackles, 2.5 TFLs and 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble.

The secondary is led by senior safeties Daniel Ruiz and Enrique Najera. Ruiz has 11 tackles with 1 INT and Najera has 14 tackles with 2 INTs.

“Both are great leaders for our young secondary,” Wright said.
