The Kansas City Chiefs have announced their Coach of the Week honors for the ninth week of the 2019 season. The awards go to Blue Springs South High School coach Matt Klein and Bonner Springs High School coach Chad Eaddy.

As a result of this honor, both schools will receive a $500 player health and safety grant from the Hunt Family Foundation. Each school will also receive a Gatorade Sideline Kit, including coolers and Gatorade products. Additionally, both coaches will be presented congratulatory footballs autographed by Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid and a certificate recognizing their selection.

Both coaches are now qualified for the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year Award, which will be voted on later this fall. The Eric Driskell Coach of the Year Award is selected by a panel comprised of the Missouri and Kansas Boards from the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association. One coach will be selected from the pool of weekly winners and will be honored at the 2020 Pro Bowl as the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year.

Blue Springs South defeated Wentzville Holt High School, 42-13, in the first round of the Missouri Class 6 playoffs. Blue Springs South entered the game as the No. 7 seed in its district but defeated the No. 2 seed to keep its season alive.

“We are proud of the way our entire program has stuck together and continued to fight throughout the season, when early on we were struggling,” Klein said. “We knew if we would stick to the process, our improvement would come late in the year and into the playoffs. We were able to get a big victory last week and we look forward to continuing our season this week as we travel to Troy Buchanan.”

Bonner Springs defeated Eudora, 49-12, to move to 7-2 on the year. The Braves have their best record since 2015 and have only lost to undefeated Tonganoxie and Paola this season.

“I am humbled and honored to receive this award, but as with everything and anything football related, it is always about the collective group,” Eaddy said. “I have an amazing group of coaches, support staff, student-athletes, Principal and Superintendent who have helped our program tremendously to get to this point. Our football program has begun to take strides over these first three years towards our ultimate goal of being known throughout Kansas as a team that competes hard year-in and year-out, is disciplined, and well coached.”

In its 23rd season, the 2019 High School Coach of the Week Fueled by Gatorade is a joint initiative of the Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football League. This program is designed to recognize and reward Kansas City area high school coaches for superior performance on a weekly basis while honoring individuals who are shaping today’s youth and tomorrow’s leaders.
