When I moved back to Kansas City, I was hoping to see good coaching and talented teams. So far this season, I haven’t been disappointed.
I was hoping to see the cream rise to the top, and it is. I’m accustomed to seeing teams run the ball, but I haven’t seen teams run the ball this effectively in a long, long time.
Why is that?
Talent and scheme.
It’s as simple as that.
On Friday, I covered Summit Christian Academy. Summit Christian runs primarily out of the spread — a zone read concept — and the Eagles run it to perfection.
Summit Christian will run the ball with its uber talented quarterback, Grayson Sprouse, until you prove you can stop him.
If you stop Sprouse, the Eagles will hit you with Lucas Eckles. On Friday, Eckles did just enough to help Summit Christian defeat Lafayette County.
That’s just one way a team can run the football.
On Saturday I saw, who I think, the best running back on the Missouri side is in Center’s Cris Ferrer.
Ferrer may only be listed at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds but he’s got a combination of power and speed, and it was on display Saturday.
Ferrer broke off big run after big run against Van Horn.
He scored four touchdowns — all longer than 50 yards — three of which came in the opening quarter — finishing the game with 369 yards on just 24 carries.
The most impressive touchdown came late in the fourth quarter. The game was tied at 20, the Yellowjackets had the ball at their own 34-yard line. Center coach Bryan DeLong called a toss sweep.
Ferrer took the pitch and hit the edge, and once he did, the foot race was over. Ferrer got to the second level of Van Horn’s defense so quick any angle that was there, quickly evaporated.
It was the perfect play call.

— Staley once again, is a force to be reckoned with. The Falcons are 4-0 and have shown no signs of slowing down anytime soon. With that being said, the next two games will show how good Staley really is.
Over the next four weeks, the Falcons will play Suburban Gold foes Lee’s Summit West and Liberty North, along with Park Hill. West seems to have turned things around after a lackluster start to the season. While Liberty North is undefeated and is considered one of the state’s best.
They should beat St. Joe Central before they play Park Hill on Oct. 18. Those three games: Lee’s Summit West, Liberty North and Park Hill, could easily be in the best games in the Metro.

After getting beat by Blair Oaks in Week 1, the defending Class 2 champs, the Spoofhounds have rattled off three straight wins.
Maryville could make it four straight this week when they host the Cameron Dragons.
