A few weeks ago we pondered who the best team on the Missouri side of the state line. The promise was if we waited a few weeks things would certainly shake out.

Here we are, a few weeks later and I’m ready to officially say I have no idea.

Rockhurst and Lee’s Summit West are obviously worthy of being in the conversation. At the same time North Kansas City hasn’t lost yet and really what more could you ask from them?

Look at the state as a whole and I’m not sure there’s many clear and away favorites other than in Class 6 with CBC throttling every Missouri school they’ve faced including handling Rockhurst 45-7 on Saturday and Class 4 with Webb City.

In every other class there’s real drama.

Moreover, there’s excitement heading into the final week of districts. Even though Webb City is the team to beat in Class 4, if a team is going to knock them off, they likely are in Class 4 District 8. Heading into the final week, FIVE teams are 7-1. The group includes Smithville, Kearney, Platte County, Excelsior Springs and St. Joseph Lafayette.

Break that down and two teams that are 7-1 right now are going to play each other the first week of the playoffs.

For my money, the most exciting class in Missouri is Class 3. Start in the northwest corner and move throughout the state and its insanity.

Maryville, the defending state champ is 7-1. Odessa is the best local hope and is 8-0. Pembroke Hill though is a real sleeper at 8-0 as well. Go on south and Cassville is 8-0 and faces Lamar this week.

Don’t forget Trinity, who may be one of the best five teams in all of St. Louis. Despite having two losses, they’ve played teams from all over the country. Plus, Cardinal Ritter is 8-0 and appears to be on a crash course for a quarterfinal matchup with Trinity.

All that means one thing… it should be a fun October and November.
