Each night that I cover a football game I get in the car afterward and head home. Sometimes it’s a short drive to my house in Raymore and I just head up the street from Raymore-Peculiar High School and I’m back home in 10 minutes.
Other times, our fearless leader Dion Clisso, forgets that I live in Cass County and sends me to Blue Springs. Those nights its not a 10-minute drive home.
But as I make those drives home I often try in my head to organize all the area Missouri football teams. Something like these three teams are the best, this is the next group and the rest of the pack is below them.
I tried doing that on Friday night after I covered the Rockhurst and Blue Springs game and I can confidently say I have no clue where anyone fits in this year.
Here’s what I do know though:
Blue Springs isn’t as bad as they looked against Rockhurst. The Wildcats looked completely out of sorts on Friday night. They’ll get organized, get tougher and be the team no one wants to face in November.
Likewise, we’re going to find out about the two of the undefeated teams in the Suburban Gold this week, Ray-Pec and Lee’s Summit North.
North gets a Blue Springs team looking for a rebound. If the Broncos want to be considered the favorite in conference, they need a win against the Wildcats. Ray-Pec meanwhile gets a Rockhurst team that wants to prove the shutout of Blue Springs was legit.
Now, that leads back to who the best team on the Missouri side of the state line is.
You could make a case for Lee’s Summit West. Their defense looked good in Week 1 and the offense caught fire late against Fort Osage to get a win.
Maybe it’s Staley. The defending Class 5 champs have done nothing but roll past their first two opponents.
Or, maybe it’s Platte County. They’ve been nails the first two weeks.
Or maybe it’s Lee’s Summit North or Rockhurst or maybe none of us know.
